Why Your AI "Intern" Needs a Human Manager

I recently asked an AI platform to summarize a lengthy document. I knew the content well, but I wanted a quick synopsis for future reference. As expected, the output was compelling and well-written.

But then, a glaring error jumped out: the summary included "facts" that simply weren't in the source material. I prompted the AI again, pointing out the mistake. It apologized, rewrote the summary... and then doubled down on the initial error with even more convincing detail.

In the AI world, we call this a "hallucination." It’s what happens when a Large Language Model (LLM) perceives a pattern or data point that doesn’t actually exist.

Ethan Mollick, in his book Co-Intelligence, describes AI as a "super-talented intern" who desperately wants to please. This "intern" is so eager to be helpful that it will confidently fabricate an answer rather than admit it doesn't know.

As HR professionals, we must be incredibly vigilant as we deploy these tools. In our world, an "unintended consequence" isn't just a typo—it’s a person’s career.

  • Candidate Screening: AI can misinterpret job skills or hallucinate non-existent requirements, causing you to filter out top-tier talent or advance unqualified candidates.

  • Sentiment Analysis: When synthesizing thousands of engagement survey comments, AI can "hallucinate" themes or misread sentiment, leading to strategic missteps based on false data.

  • Performance Reviews: Managers over-relying on AI to draft reviews may miss subtle inaccuracies that damage trust and fairness.

AI is a world-class assistant, but it is a terrible solo pilot. To maintain an ethical, high-performing workplace, we must keep a "Human in the Loop".

As you integrate AI into your processes today, treat it as a draft, not the final word. Always verify, always double-check, and never forget the human element.
